From Blood and Ash delivers exactly what fantasy romance readers crave: a strong-willed heroine, swoon-worthy love interests, and enough plot twists to keep you guessing until the final pages. Jennifer L. Armentrout crafts a world where Poppy, the supposedly pure Maiden destined for sacrifice, discovers her true power while navigating complex relationships with the mysterious Hawke and the duty-bound Ryker.

The book excels at building romantic tension—Armentrout knows how to write chemistry that practically burns off the page, and the banter between Poppy and Hawke crackles with wit and sexual tension. The magic system, while not groundbreaking, provides solid worldbuilding around Atlantians, gods, and ancient prophecies.

Armentrout also deserves credit for subverting expectations; what begins as a familiar chosen one narrative evolves into something more complex as Poppy's true identity unfolds.

However, the pacing suffers from uneven development. The first half moves slowly as Armentrout establishes the world and Poppy's sheltered existence, while the latter half rushes through major revelations. Some plot points feel convenient rather than earned, and certain secondary characters remain frustratingly underdeveloped.

The dialogue occasionally veers into modern vernacular that breaks immersion in the fantasy setting. Additionally, while the romance is undeniably steamy, some readers may find the power dynamics problematic, particularly given the deception central to the main relationship. This book is perfect for readers who loved Sarah J. Maas but want something slightly less dense, or those seeking fantasy romance with genuine surprises. New adult readers who enjoy possessive love interests and don't mind instalove will find much to enjoy. However, readers seeking complex political intrigue, slow-burn romance, or more mature fantasy should look elsewhere. Those sensitive to themes of manipulation in romantic relationships may also want to skip this one. Despite its flaws, From Blood and Ash succeeds as addictive escapist fantasy that will leave many readers immediately reaching for the sequel.

That's the general verdict — find out if From Blood and Ash matches YOUR taste.
